In 1950 when Joint School District No. 2 was formed, Meridian was the largest city within the new district, and the city's name became the informal name for the district, "The Meridian School District."

Today, Meridian remains the largest city served entirely by Joint School District No. 2 (since its creation in 1950, the city of Boise has expanded into the the district) and continues to grow at a rapid pace.
