Those students who have been admitted to the Core Literacy Magnet track at Paramount Elementary will be assigned to classrooms where the instruction will be based on a teaching method developed by The Spalding International Foundation. Instruction will follow the guidelines from the manual titled, The Writing Road To Reading.

Classroom instruction will include the following features:
  • An accelerated curriculum, aimed at teaching to the top 1/3 of the class.
  • A multisensory (seeing, hearing, speaking, touching) teaching technique where all learning styles are addressed.
  • Visual and verbal mastery of 70 phonograms, (phonograms are visual representative of the 44 sounds in the English language).
  • High emphasis on handwriting.

  • Intensified spelling lessons, whereby students receive in-depth lessons in the structure of the English language.

  • Emphasis on developing higher level diagnostic thinking skills, whereby students are taught how to verbally explain the rules of the English language.

  • Writing and reading instruction using fiction and non-fiction text.

  • Reading and comprehension lessons based on quality literature.

  • Availability of an after school tutoring lab for students who need additional help to ensure that they master the required skills.

  • Whole group instruction, whereby students sit in desks facing the front of the classroom and receive direct instruction and modeling from the teacher.
